The Doctoral School at the University of Genoa prepares its students for academic positions at international universities or to conduct research in the corporate and public sector. The scope and the depth of resources available through the programme and individual attention of professors assist candidates in achieving high-standard knowledge according to their objectives.

Faculty of Law - Doctoral School

Courses:

  • Corporate Governance, Civil Law and International Law
  • Criminal Law and Procedure
  • Philosophy of Law and Legal Bio-Ethics
  • Methods and Techniques for the Drawing Up and Assessment of Laws

The
Corporate Governance course is offered by The Department of Private, International and Commercial Law (G.L.M. Casaregi). Its programme is set for a period of three years.

The Doctorate in Corporate Governance offers an exceptional opportunity for students who are interested in exploring, strengthening and further developing their research in the challenging field of corporate governance. The programme is designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to acquire skills of professional academic research to work in academia, multinational corporations, financial institutions, public or private agencies.

Students conduct their research working closely with professors from the Faculty of Law in a programme designed to meet individual research interests and professional goals. The School maintains working relationships with various departments from the University of Genoa and other universities. Our doctorate students have the opportunity to meet with scholars from a range of academic disciplines.

The Doctorate programme has a wide portfolio of research in the corporate governance area, both in an Italian and an international context. While the programme is designed to specialise students in the fields of corporate governance, it provides them with interdisciplinary knowledge.

Our research topics include the following:

  • Ownership structures and control; emphasis on comparison between civil law countries and common law countries
  • Investor protection
  • Role of small shareholders
  • Board size and composition
  • Directors’ compensation
  • Best practice in corporate governance
  • Comparative analysis between European codes and legislation
  • Role of information and disclosure
  • Private equity
  • Takeovers

We expect area studies to evolve and grow as the activity of the Centre develops.

The Doctoral programme provides a solid methodology, which is achieved through a wide range of activities, courses, seminars and conferences in Italy and abroad. International renowned professors are invited to give courses on special topics.

It is expected that students will produce research papers publishable in national and international journals. Candidates are offered a number of fellowships, based on certain criteria.
