About the Centre

Foundation

Genoa Centre for Law and Finance (previously CEDIF, Centro di Diritto e Finanza), is aimed at promoting research and debate on key legal and financial issues. CEDIF, its predecessor, was established with a generous grant awarded by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Genova e Imperia.

The founding of CEDIF took place at a Conference in Santa Margherita in 1996, the proceedings of which were published by Kluwer Academic Publisher Group in 1998 under the title: “European Securities Markets: The Investment Services Directive and Beyond”.

The 1996 Conference was followed by other events and the publication of two collective books:

  • “Capital Markets in the Age of the Euro. Cross-Border Transactions, Listed Companies and Regulations”; by Guido Ferrarini, Klaus J. Hopt, Eddy Wymeersch; Kluwer Law International, 2002
  • “Investor Protection in Europe. Corporate Law Making. The MiFID and Beyond”; Edited by: Guido Ferrarini and Eddy Wymeersch; Oxford University Press, 2006

Overview and Activity

Since its foundation, the Genoa Centre for Law and Finance has been enhancing its objectives and activity, with a view to ensuring its integration in the national and international research structures. The Centre’s activity is conducted within the framework of the “G.L.M. Casaregi” Department of Private, International and Commercial Law of the University of Genoa, Italy.

The Centre acts as a research point for monitoring, challenging and advancing the systems of international corporate governance, law and financial markets. It is dedicated to enhancing an interdisciplinary legal and business education in these areas, in order to influence and drive the debate among the academic community, as well as the legal and business practitioners.

The Centre recognises that good governance practices, thorough knowledge of the international differences between capital markets and the ongoing changing regulatory environment are essential for an optimum business performance. Our cross-disciplinary research focuses on the regulatory and legal aspects of financial markets and institutions, providing a platform to stimulate debate and define recommendations.

The Centre brings together researchers in law and finance with complementary academic and professional international experience. It has established collaborations with Italian and international universities, other research organisations and networks.

The Centre engages in independent thinking, producing high-quality research, disseminating its results and recommendations through publications, seminars and conferences at an international level. Activities at the Centre are aimed at the academic community, financial market regulators, the financial and business community. The Centre examines the following major areas of research:

  • Corporate Governance Law and Practice
  • Capital Markets
  • Enforcement
  • Banking and Insurance Law and Policy
